Finite Grand Unified Theories and The Quark Mixing Matrix
نویسنده
چکیده
In super Yang–Mills theories, under certain conditions satisfied by the spectrum and the Yukawa couplings, the beta functions will vanish to all orders in perturbation theory. We address the generation of realistic quark mixing angles and masses in such finite Grand Unified Theories. Working in the context of finite SUSY SU(5), we present several examples with realistic quark mixing matrices. Non-Abelian discrete symmetries are found to play a crucial role in satisfying the conditions for finiteness. Our realistic examples are based on permutation symmetries and the tetrahedral symmetry A4. These examples enable us to address more detailed questions such as the decay rate of the proton in finite GUTs. Where does Flavour Mixing come from ?
We argue that flavour mixing, both in the quark and charged lepton sector, is basically determined by the lightest family mass generation mechanism. So, in the chiral symmetry limit when the up and down quark masses vanish, all the quark mixing angles vanish. This mechanism is not dependent on the number of quark-lepton families nor on any " vertical " symmetry structure, unifying quarks and le...
متن کاملNeutrino Masses and Flavour Symmetry
The problem of neutrino masses and mixing angles is analysed in a class of supersymmetric grand unified models, with SO(10) gauge symmetry and global U(2) flavour symmetry. Adopting the seesaw mechanism for the generation of the neutrino masses, one obtains a mass matrix for the left–handed neutrinos which is directly related to the parameters of the charged sector, while the unknown parameters...
متن کاملLepton mass matrices from a quark-lepton analogy
We study the implications of having a similarity between quark and lepton mixing in the Dirac sector of the Standard Model plus the right-handed neutrino. This enable us to describe all masses and mixings in the Dirac sector in terms of only five parameters: three mass scales mb, mτ and mt, one parameter λ describing all the mixings, and a CP violating phase in the quark sector. Then, from expe...
متن کاملSelecting Finite Unified Theories with Current Data
Finite Unified Theories (FUTs) are N = 1 supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories that can be made all-loop finite, leading to a severe reduction of the free parameters. We review the investigation of FUTs based on SU(5) in the context of low-energy phenomenology observables. Using the restrictions from the top and bottom quark masses, it is possible to discriminate between different models. Inclu...

The phenomenological model that all quark and lepton mass matrices have the same zero texture, namely their (1,1), (1,3) and (3,1) components are zeros, is discussed in the context of SO(10) Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). The mass matrices of type I for quarks are consistent with the experimental data in the quark sector. For the lepton sector, consistent fitting to the data of neutrino oscilla...
